Can I still adopt a dog?

Hi everyone, this is my first post. My sister and I are still studying while my father and mother are working. Everyone is out after 8am and I will be the earliest to reach home by around 5-6pm. My question is, during this period from 8am to 6pm, will the dog feel very lonely and suffer from depression ? I have no experience in having a dog as a pet but my family are keen on having one. Can any kind souls tell me which dogs are independent in keeping themselves entertained while we are out or the worst, my family should not even have pets? We live in a HDB executive unit, and we are planning to lock the dog in the kitchen while we are out. Will we affect the dogs emotion? Im so worried=( And also, which breeds are cute, wont bark like they are insane and also independent to entertain themselves when we are out???? =)
