Hi all,

I'm looking for either a japanese spitz, golden retriever or shetland sheepdog. Hope to adopt one due to my limited allowance or i don't mind to purchase one at a negotiated price as long as the dog is healthy. I've been looking out at alot of pet shops but all are too much for me to afford.
Can anyone assist me here. I'll greatly appreciate.

And i've an enquiry, will shetland sheepdog do without airconditioner? Will the chances of them falling ill increase?

Looking forward to reponses.
Thanks,
bella

Hi bellathm,

Great to know that you want a lovely companion in your life =) But honestly, and I hope you don't take this the wrong way, I'm not sure your ready to have one financially. The cost of having a dog doesn't stop at the initial price you pay for it. If you are having problems just buying a dog, I don't see how you'll be able to afford the maintenance of one especially if you get a puppy.

I have a shetland sheepdog myself and when I first got her I never thought I'd have to pump so much into keeping her. I knew it'd be an expensive affair but I didn't know it would be that much.

We got her when she was almost 2 months old now she's 10 months and by my records where I write down almost every expense for her, we're into the thousands already. She's all good and healthy but she sometimes has minor problems that make things quite costly.

It's not just food, grooming and toys. That's the most inexpensive part actually. It's the stuff like heartworm, tick and flea medications and supplements to make sure she stays really healthy and happy. And this is all essential monthly stuff so you can't skip on it unless you want the dog to suffer for the sake of your wallet.

And there are unexpected expenses like ear infections, skin problems. Even if you get a healthy dog at the beginning, there is no guarantee that nothing will happen later. It's not about the dog falling sick it's more of the dog having an ongoing problem like a persistent skin problem that costs a lot to treat because you have to keep trying different shampoos and food that works for it. And with a pedigree breed like the ones you mentioned, skin problems are very rampant. Pedigrees have many breed-related problems ranging from skin problems to unhealthy bones and organs.

I'm not trying to say if you can't afford to pay $2000 for a dog, you are not fit to own one but rather you might not be ready for one yet. As a guide you should have a backup amount of at least $1500 on top of the cost of getting the dog in case something happens which very likely will.

Shelties can live without air-con no problem as long as your house doesn't get too warm and stuffy otherwise you'll find them drooling a lot. So far no shelties for adoption, a few japanese spitzes and plenty of goldies around.

yes, owning a dog is quite costly. Everyone that wants a dog only think of the cost of buying it and it's food.

Thanks for the advice out there.
I've decided to save up to an extend wherby i can spare for other expenses on the dog before i get one. So it would really help me alot if i could adopt one or at a cheaper rate.
Are you advice on where can i adopt a spitz or golden retriever?

thanks.
